MBA in Development Work

On the 23rd April 2015 RISE Kenya signed an MOU with Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA) and Training in Development Education (TIDE) to start offering MBAs in Development Work.

The MBA-Development Work is an initiative of the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA), the Regional Institute of Social Enterprise (RISE, Kenya) and Training in Development Education (TIDE, Netherlands).

This MBA is tailor made for development professionals from NGOs, government and the churches. It includes all the standard MBA subjects like accounting, marketing, strategy and organization, focused on development work, including project initiation, advising and evaluation. The politics and anthropology of development work will be illuminated. The program responds to the ever-increasing need for highly qualified professionals.

This is an action-learning MBA, which means that the participants’ work-practice plays a central role. Action learning connects theoretical knowledge, entrepreneurial instruments and practical experience to one another. The curriculum focuses on the analysis and improvement of your practice. Faculty teach but also advise; learning is competency focused --- that is, it comes to grips with your practical and professional needs.

The program duration is 18 months, divided into five blocks. Blocks one to four are each 3 ½ months. In each of the blocks 1 to 4 there is one four day workshop, including European as well as local faculty. Each module includes practice directed assignments and evaluation based on your hands-on development. Between workshops there is on-line tutoring and set group support in Nairobi. In each block, you will follow two courses or modules. The fifth block, which lasts 4 months, is devoted to completing your final project report.

Diploma and Certificate in Paralegal Work

In 2010 about 750,000 candidates sat for KCPE. Four years later 480,000 sat for their KCSE with only 150,000 getting C+ the and above giving them university access ( if they can afford it.) What happened to everyone else? To note is that as they were sitting their KCSE in 2014, 880,000 pupils were sitting for their KCPE.
Regardless of their reasons for dropping out, quite a good number of the thousands dropped by the system find their way in the informal economy mostly working as laborers, farmers, and traders.

Further given that they are more available than their “more educated” counterparts, in most regions across the country this cadre of people drive local community development and will comprise the biggest number of CHWs, CBO/SHG members, to mention a few.
Providing an avenue for them to increase their knowledge base and get formal accreditation not only creates a better populace driving local development conversations and agenda but also creates for better opportunities for the individuals.

While it is true they lack formal academic qualifications and would have a hard time fitting in the average higher learning institution to acquire the same, it is not true that they are unable to learn. They just need a different learning set up, one drawing more on practical experiences than academic theories.
The Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA) and Regional Institute of Social Enterprise (RISE) have partnered to provide this one of a kind opportunity.
The RISE-CUEA Paralegal courses are designed to equip anyone interested in making an impact through business with not only the “knowledge” to do it, but the practical know-how to make it happen.

It will also provide an avenue for them to increase their knowledge base and get formal accreditation not only creates a better populace driving local development conversations and agenda but also creates for better opportunities for the individuals.

Diploma and Certificate in Impact Entrepreneurship and Social Business

The Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA) and Regional Institute of Social Enterprise (RISE) have partnered to provide this one of a kind opportunity.
The RISE-CUEA applied social entrepreneurship courses are designed to equip anyone interested in making an impact through business with not only the “knowledge” to do it, but the practical know-how to make it happen.

Drawing on RISE’s rich experience facilitating grassroots community social and economic development and CUEA’s tradition of academic rigor in the production of transformative leaders, this course is a rich fusion of academic yet practical learning.

From 6 weeks, to 9 months, the task oriented modular approach gives the flexibility for people to learn at their own pace while drawing on their everyday experiences sometimes at home, at times in normal classroom setting, and at times in selected field environments.

Given that most of the learning is activity based, the bigger part of the learner’s evaluation is also activity based with projects getting a bigger weight than tests in deciding whether a student is doing well or poorly.
